Let’s embark on a sound journey with the sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, the driving forces behind Heart and (re-)discover the music of this rock group from the Pacific Northwest that gifted us with some of the most thrilling rock anthems of the 1970s and 1980s.
I’ve compiled two plus one playlists with 37 songs and some 150 min. of Heart music. Our journey will take us through ten Heart albums spanning 15 years.
“Magic Man” was Heart’s first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Written by Ann & Nancy Wilson, it reached #9 in summer of ‘76.
Our journey begins in 1976 with Heart’s debut album Dreamboat Annie which generated two top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Crazy on You” reached #35 and “Magic Man” topped out at #9.
Next is 1977’s Little Queen which gave Heart their second top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with the classic “Barracuda” which reached #11 in summer of 1977.
1978 saw the album release of Dog & Butterfly including the mystic “Mistral Wind”, one of favorites from Heart.
Leaving the ‘70s now and reaching 1980, we have come to Bebe Le Strange, Heart’s fifth studio album. “Even It Up” cracked the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to #33.
1980’s Greatest Hits Live generated Heart’s second top 10 single on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart with “Tell It Like It Is” topping out at #9.
A brief visit leads us then to 1982’s Private Audition and 1983’s Passionworks.
This concludes stage one of our Heart sound journey.
These Dreams - A Heart Sound Journey /1 Track Listing
This is a great interview by Professor of Rock with Ann Wilson of Heart telling her story on Heart’s ‘70s classic hit “Magic Man”.
Stage two of our Heart sound journey brings us to the summer of 1985. With the release of Heart’s eponymous eighth studio album the band took off, with five singles all charting on the Billboard Hot 100.
Four of those singles reached the top 10 with “What About Love?“ hitting #10, “Never” climbing to #4, “These Dreams” becoming Heart’s first chart topper on the pop charts, and “Nothin’ at All” also cracking the top 10. Heart (the album) reached quintuple platinum status in the U.S.
1987’s Bad Animals saw Heart once again reaching the top on Billboard ‘s Hot 100 chart with “Alone” and two additonal top 40 hits, “Who Will You Run To” which reached #7 and the top 15 hit “There’s the Girl” (#12).
We’ve now reached spring of 1990 and the release of Brigade. Again Heart were welcome on the Billboard Hot 100 with another three top 40 hits. “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You” went all the way to #2, the June release “I Didn’t Want to Need You” reached #23, and “Stranded” once again cracked the top 15 by landing at #13.
This is where our Heart sound journey comes to a close (for now). It’s not the end of the bands career. Those prolific minds kept on recording songs and producing albums in the coming years and decades. So there’s a chance we will embark on another Heart sound journey.
Now please enjoy your very own journey through the magic world of Heart songs.
These Dreams - A Heart Sound Journey /2 Track Listing
Another great piece by Professor of Rock. This is about the making of „These Dreams“, Heart’s 1986 #1 Billboard Hot 100 smash. Includes a very touching story about a young Heart fan who died much too young.
If you prefer the softer side of Heart, this playlist might please your ears.

An awesome live performance of Heart’s 1977 classic “Barracuda” from Alive in Seattle (a live DVD and album released in 2003). It’s part of their final concert in Seattle, during their “Summer of Love Tour” in 2002.
