Sounds And Colors

A Place Where Music Meets Color

Welcome to our sound journey through the world of „moony“ songs.

Since the moon has inspired a lot of artists in the history of pop(ular) music, this will be a comprehensive journey.

In other words, we will be travelling by stages. Not in four stages like the moon who grows, quarter by quarter. But in three.

So let’s go.

Please enjoy.

“Fly Me to the Moon” came into the world as a romantic ballad written by Bart Howard in 1954. Ten years later, Frank Sinatra, accompanied by Count Basie and with arrangements by Quincy Jones, made it a swing classic. Taken from Frank Sinatra’s 1964 album It Might as Well Be Swing.

Stage two of our journey through the world of moony songs brings us to the
songs from the 1960s and the 1970s. Broadened perspective this time. Not only the moon but wider outer space.

King Harvest turned the French-American band Boffalongo’s 1969 original “Dancing in the Moonlight” into a worldwide hit in 1972 with their smooth, infectious blend of pop and soft rock. The song reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Taken from King Harvest’s eponymous album, which was released in the same year.

If you’d like to learn more about the Moon, this entertaining PBS Eons episode is a great place to start:

The third and final stage of our discovery tour on „moon“ songs. Now, it’s up to the 1980s, 1990s, and beyond to show what’s on offer in those places in time.

Poco’s smooth “Shoot for the Moon” was released in 1982 from their album Ghost Town. The song pleased the early 1980s adult contemporary audience and went to #10 on Billboard’s AC chart.
