A spooky & happy Halloween

Halloween isn’t just a night — it’s a soundtrack. This year, let’s celebrate it with music that thrills, chills, and delights.

The word Halloween comes from All Hallows’ Eve, the night before All Saints’ Day. Over the centuries, it absorbed ancient Celtic traditions from Samhain, marking the end of the harvest season, the start of winter — the “darker half” of the year — and the thinning of the veil between the living and the dead.

Today, Halloween is a playful, spooky, and imaginative celebration, and what better way to experience it than through music?

To honor this year’s edition, I’ve curated a Spotify playlist with 66 hand-picked, Halloween-compatible songs, celebrating the night — from October 31 to November 1… and beyond, if you like.

Our 2025 Halloween Sound Journey | Spooky & Freaky Songs takes us through seven decades, from the 1950s to the 2010s.

Along the way, we’ll encounter multifaceted sounds — from rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, and pop, to hip-hop, synth-pop, cinematic instrumentals, and alternative — each track carefully chosen to conjure chills, thrills, and fun.

A stellar line-up of stars like Michael Jackson, Dusty Springfield, AC/DC, Ella Fitzgerald, The Police, Whodini, The Doors, Eagles, The Cranberries, to name but a few.

So turn off the lights, light some candles, press play, and let the ghosts, ghouls, and grooves take over.

Happy Halloween! 🎃👻🎃

A classic, instantly recognizable, setting a spine-chilling mood perfectly. Originally composed by John Carpenter for his 1978 film Halloween, its minimalist synth lines and eerie melody have haunted audiences ever since. Made on a budget of just $300,000, Halloween grossed $70 million, becoming one of the most profitable independent films of all time.

Smooth, mysterious, and unmistakably Dusty. Never released as a single, but one of Dusty Springfield’s most memorable songs. “Spooky” appeared as closing track on her 1968 album Dusty… Definitely. Originally released by Classics IV in 1967 (reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart), Dusty took a sultry, slower, and jazzy approach for her version.

History Channel’s The Real Story of Halloween (2010) explores the origins of Halloween and how it became the holiday we know and enjoy today.

Funky, fun, and undeniably spooky. Released in summer of 1983 Whodini’s “Haunted House of Rock” (from their 1982 eponymous debut album) brings Halloween vibes straight to the dance floor and, in my opinion, makes it eligible for any Halloween playlist.

A deep dive to uncover the true story of Halloween. Interesting for everyone who likes to go beyond scratching the surface.

An in-depth look at John Carpenter’s 1978 horror classic Halloween. From 2018. Very good ratings on imdb.com.

Playful, jazzy, and delightfully mischievous, Ella Fitzgerald’s “Ding-Dong, The Witch is Dead” brings a wink of charm to Halloween. Originally from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, Ella’s swinging rendition adds her signature vocal sparkle, turning a celebratory tune into a timeless, cheeky delight.

Mysterious, mythic, epic, and magical. IMO these attributes apply to Halloween as well as the Faroe Islands, an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean, located between Scotland and Iceland. That’s why I’ve included this video in this blog post. The terrain of the Faroe Islands is rugged with fjords and cliffs. The YouTube channel Scenic Relaxation has created of wonderful piece of art featuring the epic landscapes of those islands.

Michael Jackson’s short film “Thriller” premiered on MTV on December 2, 1983 (MTV’s first world premiere video). imdb.com describes it “A night at the movies turns into a nightmare when a hoard of bloodthirsty zombies attacks Michael and his date – only a “Thriller” can save them now.” This short film supported the release of “Thriller”, Michael’s sixth single from his mega smash album of the same name which hit the shelves in the fall of 1982. It reached #4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

AC/DC rocking Argentina with “Hells Bells” @Live At River Plate in December 2009. From their 1980 album Back in Black.
