Some 2023 Xmas Vibes

The 2023 holiday season has begun. This means, it’s time for a sound journey through the world of Christmas songs.

I’ve put together two playlists with Yuletide songs (a total of 45).

Playlist #1 comes with a stellar line-up of R&B stars from the ‘80s and ‘90s up to the 2010s, including Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Mary J. Blige, and Babyface, to name but a few.

The second playlist will take us through a broader range of genres and decades with music from the ‘40s through the 2010s. We will come along songs by Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, The Carpenters, Wham, and many more.

Mary J. Blige’s rendition of the Donny Hathaway classic. “This Christmas” – written by Donny Hathaway and Nadine McKinnor – was originally released in ‘68 by Atco Records and has ever since become a modern Christmas standard. Taken from Mary’s 2013 album A Mary Christmas.

Mariah Carey’s 2020 video edition of her ‘94 modern Christmas classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. 25 years after its release, on December 16 2019, the song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, marking Carey’s 19th chart-topper and solidifying her record as the solo artist with the most US number-ones in history.

Otis Redding’s interpretation of “Merry Christmas Baby”, an R&B Christmas standard, written by Lou Baxter and Johnny Moore in ‘47.

Destiny’s Child’s witty version of the ‘49 Christmas classic “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer”. The original, song by Gene Autry, hit #1 on the U.S. charts the week of Christmas 1949. Taken from DC’s 8 Days of Christmas (2005 reissue and digital edition).
