Today let’s take a deep dive into the sounds of songwriter and producer Jim Steinman.

Working with a stellar line-up of stars like Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, and Barbra Streisand, Jim Steinman created some of the best and most memorable power ballads of the ‘80s and ‘90s.

I’ve created two playlists with 17 songs, written and/or produced by Jim Steinman. Our sound journey will begin in spring of ‘78 and come to a close in fall of 2006.

We will come along songs by Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, Air Supply, and Barry Manilow, to name but a few.

Please enjoy.

“Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” was Meat Loaf’s first hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The song – written by Jim Steinman and produced by Todd Rundgren – climbed to #11 in spring of ‘78. 🪔 R.I.P. Meat Loaf

Meat Loaf’s second offering from Bat Out of Hell. “You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth” scratched the top 40 in summer of ‘78, topping out at #39 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Loving You’s a Dirty Job But Somebody’s Gotta Do It” by Bonnie Tyler & Todd Rundgren
from fall of ‘85. Only released in the UK, it never became a big hit. Nevertheless it embodies all the magic of a power ballad written by Jim Steinman.

One of Jim Steinman’s ultimate masterpieces and his second biggest hit as a songwriter. “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, performed by Bonnie Tyler, went to #1 in the US and the UK in spring of ’83. Taken from Bonnie’s album Faster Than the Speed of Night.

Already a “Steinmaniac” or wanna become one? Here’s your chance?

Jim Steinman was not only a blessed songwritter and producer but also a delightsome storyteller. In this almost four hour long interview (two videos) from 2003 Jim tells us the backstories to the music and songs he created, as a songwriter and producer, with a stellar line-up of stars (spanning over three decades).
